Inside: Make this easy DIY Paper Straw Flag celebrating Memorial Day, 4th of July or any patriotic event.

Her birthday is July 3rd, almost an Independence Day baby.

She loves red. And blue and white. Her home is decorated with American flags: one drapes from the carved wooden folk art eagle, a few weathered flags adorn the garage exterior, and another is covered in glitter attached to a patriotic clad figurine. She is an Americana collector and her vast collection is the envy of her friends.

Who is she?

She is my mother and her flag collection is the inspiration for this card.

Gather the following tools and supplies to create the Paper Straw Flag:

• paper straws
• white cardstock
• paper
• liquid glue
• adhesive

How to Make the Card Base

1. Cut the white cardstock to be 4.25″ high by 8.5″ wide. Cut the red gingham paper to be 5.25″ high x 4″ wide.
2. Fold the white cardstock in half lengthwise and use the bone folder to crisp the edge.
3. Adhere the gingham paper to the card using the adhesive.
4. Cut another piece of white cardstock to be 4.25″ wide by 2 5/8″. This piece will be the base for your flag.

How to Make the Flag

1. Cut 2 blue straws into 2″ lengths using your x-acto knife. On a self-healing mat, hold down the paper straw and gently cut through the straw using a sawing motion to get a clean cut.
2. Cut 6 red straws into 5 lengths of 4 3/8″ and 6 lengths of 2 3/8″.
3. Adhere straws to white cardstock base using liquid glue. Allow the glue to set up by placing a lightweight object on top of the flag to weigh it down.
4. Adhere the flag to the card using adhesive.

6. Give or mail the Paper Straw Flag Card.

Getting It Together

With the society push to use paper straws instead of plastic straws, you will be amazed to find them in many stores including Michaels, Target, Walmart and dollar stores. Paper straws are the bomb and are so much fun to craft with.

Did It Make the Cut?

This card was up against stiff competition from my mother’s vast flag collection. Would it be a worthy addition? Yes. The paper straw flag card passed with flying colors and is prominently displayed in a patriotic vignette on the dining room buffet.
