May 16, 2018 by Tina Kistinger 3 Comments

Make this easy DIY birthday card for friends, moms, dads, kids and anyone else you can think of. By following the simple step-by-step tutorial, you'll have a handmade card in under an hour! #craftedliving #birthdaycards #diycrafts #cardmakingWelcome to Day 18 of 31 Days of Handmade Cards! Candles are appropriate for birthday cards so why not use colorful paper straws as candles. I am so in love with these paper straws and know you will be too.

Gather the following tools and supplies to create the card for Day 18 of 31 Days of Handmade Cards:

(These next 8 links are affiliate links which means I get a commission if you purchase through me.)

  • Ultimate Card Making Tool Kit
  • Cricut Straight from the Nest cartridge
  • confetti embossing folder
  • paper straws
  • white cardstock and colored cardstock
  • glue
  • tape runner
  • mini tape runner
  1. Cut the green cardstock to be 4.25″ high by 8.5″ wide. Cut the white cardstock to be 5.25″ high x 4″ wide.
  2. Fold the green cardstock in half lengthwise and use the bone folder to crisp the edge.
  3. Run the white cardstock using the embossing folder through the Cuttlebug machine.
  4. Adhere the embossed panel to the card using the tape runner.
  5. Cut 7 paper straws in half using the x-acto knife. On a self-healing mat, hold down the paper straw and gently cut through the straw using a sawing motion to get a clean cut.
  6. Cut the candle flames from Straight from the Nest. Experiment with the sizing so the flames are sized appropriately to the straws. Assemble the candle flames.
  7. Adhere the paper straws to the card using glue. Adhere the candle flames atop each straw to complete the card.
  8. Write your own sentiment or download the sentiments freebie below and mail Day 18 of 31 Days of Handmade Cards.[mailerlite_form form_id=2]

I used the most colorful straws I had to create this card because I wanted a cheery, happy feel. You can find paper straws at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart and Amazon. I found Amazon to have the largest selection and the above card is a mix of straws from Amazon and Michaels. This card is easy to duplicate and young and old would love to receive it. Meet me back here for Day 19 of the 31 Days of Handmade Cards. Be creative!

Editor’s note: I created this card using the Cricut Creative Memories Tiny Treasures cartridge, which is no longer available. The Straight from the Nest cartridge is a suitable alternative.
